National Collegiate Agency of the Year

36 EMTs from HFSVAS attended this year's National Collegiate EMS Foundation (NCEMSF) annual conference in Baltimore, Maryland. Harpur's Ferry sends representatives each year to the conference which provides collegiate agencies with fantastic lectures specific to leadership, medical care, EMS initiatives, and event management with regards to the collegiate setting.

This year, Harpur's Ferry Ambulance was named as the National Collegiate Agency of the Year. Harpur's Ferry is the only agency to receive this award twice (05-06 previously). The award recognizes the fantastic accomplishments of the agency in the past year.

HFSVAS moved into its new squadroom in August of 2011, only to move all operations temporarily to the University Event Center in September with the onset of the flood that hit the Susquehanna region. The Event Center was the largest temporary evacuation center in the region, and HFSVAS was responsible for 24 hour emergency care for 11 days while the center was open. Harpur's Ferry staffed a treatment room on site with BLS and ALS crews 24 hours a day and provided emergency care to hundreds of victims. Meanwhile, HF maintained coverage for the campus as usual.

Harpur's Ferry community contributions were not limited to the flood; however. The agency covered 98 mutual aid calls. As a part of the Broome County Mutual Aid system, Harpur's Ferry is often dispatched to the surrounding area to cover medical calls when other agency resources are exhausted. HFSVAS has responded to Newark Valley, the Town of Vestal, City of Binghamton, Colesville, and even Pennsylvania.

NCEMSF is not the first to recognize Harpur's Ferry for its accomplishments and growth this past year. The Binghamton University Pipe Dream, the Journal of Emergency Medical Services, and EMS World all wrote articles on HF's response to the flood. Broome County also named Harpur's Ferry as the Broome County EMS Agency of the Year for 2011.

On behalf of the agency staff and membership, we are honored for the recognition of our ongoing hard work and dedication to the well being of our campus and surrounding community and look forward to continuing our success in the future.
