HIPAA Compliance

Harpur’s Ferry Student Volunteer Ambulance Service is required by law and is dedicated to maintaining the confidentiality of your medical health records. This information is known as Protected Health Information (PHI).

Harpur’s Ferry does not disclose your information without your direct permission. Patient Care Reports, the documentation completed regarding the care rendered, are only released under subpoena or written request by the patient or the patient’s legal guardian.

University Police and Resident Assistants are often present prior to Harpur’s Ferry due to various circumstances. Patients are under no obligation to provide their personal health information. UPD often responds strictly to ensure crew safety, and RAs often are solely interested in facilitating your recovery upon your return from the hospital.

Exceptions:

  • Patient information can be disclosed to members of the responding crew in effort to provide the best patient care possible.
  • Patient information can be shared with receiving health care facilities.
  • Patient information can be discussed within the agency for health care operations including quality assurance activity and review.
  • Should you be under 18 and refuse transport or treatment of any kind. This is due to state regulations regarding treatment of minors

HIPAA regulations apply to medical personnel on the crew. Harpur’s Ferry does not, however, have control over the actions of other agencies, parties, or bystanders. Harpur’s Ferry providers make every effort to mitigate privacy concerns on scene to respect patient dignity.
