Harpur’s Ferry hosted its 12th annual EMS conference on November 11, 2024, at the Innovative Technologies Complex. The event welcomed students from Binghamton University, SUNY Oswego, and Stony Brook University, providing them with opportunities to engage with healthcare professionals and enhance their medical knowledge.
Organized by Heather Vamossy, a junior biology major, and Katelyn George, a senior majoring in integrative neuroscience, the conference featured lectures and presentations on various emergency medicine topics, including training development, stroke patient treatment, EMS operations, and endocrine emergencies. Notably, several Harpur’s Ferry alumni returned as speakers:
- Dr. Adam Bitterman ’05, an orthopedic surgeon and assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, discussed orthopedic emergencies, sharing real case studies and emphasizing the importance of diligence in the field.
- Sebastian Geraci ’18 addressed OB/GYN emergencies, such as eclampsia and ectopic pregnancies, and highlighted the EMT’s role in supporting patients experiencing intimate partner violence.
- Dr. Jim Rodriguez ’99, an emergency medicine physician and assistant medical director at TeamHealth, presented on pediatric toxicology emergencies, engaging students with real-life scenarios to develop their critical thinking skills.
The conference also included interactive activities like medical-themed “Jeopardy!” games, allowing students to apply their knowledge in a collaborative setting. Participants appreciated the hands-on learning experiences and the opportunity to gain advanced techniques applicable to their future careers.
This annual event underscores Harpur’s Ferry’s commitment to fostering education and professional development in the EMS community, bridging the gap between current students and accomplished alumni.
